For ages I was doing everything right and still not getting the photos I wanted.

My exposure was good. I understood my aperture, my shutter, my ISO. And my photos still came out flat, still didn’t look like the ones that made me want the camera. I assumed I was missing some talent everybody else had.

I wasn’t. I just hadn’t touched the side of the camera where the look actually lives: the film simulation, the white balance shift, the tone and colour settings. Nobody tells you those are the ones that matter. Getting your exposure right makes a correct photo. Those settings are what make it yours.

The day I sorted them, everything changed, and my skill hadn’t moved an inch.

You’ve seen the viral warm flash photos, that glowy, flashy, night-out look everyone’s obsessed with. And you’ve probably heard Sony can’t do it: too cold, too harsh, too clinical. Not true. Yeah, a lot of us shoot a similar warm, filmic look. It got popular because it’s genuinely beautiful, that’s not a scandal, that’s good taste spreading. But here’s what the “you all look the same” crowd misses: a recipe is a starting point, not the photo. Hand two people the same one and you’ll get two completely different results, because the look actually lives in how you expose, your white balance shift, and the light you choose. The photos that blur together are people copying a recipe without learning the settings underneath it. The ones with a look that’s unmistakably theirs understand what they’re doing.

That’s the whole thing I teach: not how to copy my look, but how to build one that’s actually yours.

What I wish I knew when I first picked up my X100VI 👇

A few things that would’ve saved me months:

1. Shoot RAW + Fine JPEG, not JPEG only. It means you can reprocess any photo later in X RAW Studio, Fuji’s free app that uses your camera as the processor. Future you will be so grateful.

2. The film simulation is half the photo. Get off the default and try Classic Chrome or Reala Ace, it changes everything before you touch another setting.

3. Underexpose a touch and let DR Auto protect your highlights. It’s far easier to recover a shadow than a blown-out sky.

4. Save your look to a custom slot (C1 to C7) so you can recall it in two clicks instead of rebuilding it every time.

What you actually need to take photos of yourself without an IG husband
